Plot Twist! Last Week’s Mystery Micro-Photo Revealed

Plot Twist! Last Week’s Mystery Micro-Photo Revealed

Last week’s Weekly Wonder Quiz fooled almost everyone! Many Explorers thought the mystery close-up was leather 👝… but under the WonderScope, the real answer was fungi.

This orange fungus looks almost like patterned fabric, but when magnified it reveals something even more fascinating.

🔬 Fun Fact: The Secret of the Tiny Holes

See those little holes? 👀
They’re tiny spore pockets. Each one is like a launchpad, sending out the fungus’s “dust seeds” (spores) into the air so it can grow in new places. 🌬️✨

That’s how fungi spread — turning fallen branches, bark, or fruit into a new home for life.

🌱 Explorer Challenge of the Week

Ready to discover fungi in your own backyard/ local park?

  1. Take your WonderScope outside.
  2. Look for mushrooms or fungi on old logs, mulch, or even in damp corners of the garden. (Most fungi are toxic — so look, don’t touch!)
  3. Zoom in close — can you spot tiny holes, patterns, or colours that look different under the lens?
  4. Share your discovery with us on Instagram by tagging @littlewonderexplorer — we’d love to feature it!
